Why Trades Get Rubbish Leads (And How To Fix It)

Trades get rubbish leads because their ads collect everyone instead of filtering anyone. No qualifying step means tyre-kickers, wrong areas and price-shoppers all land in your inbox. Fix the filter, and the leads get good.

Nothing kills your faith in advertising faster than a phone full of leads that go nowhere. People who never answer, people an hour away, people who wanted a price and vanished. It feels like the leads are the problem. They're not. It's what's generating them.

What a rubbish lead actually is

A rubbish lead is anyone who was never going to become a job: the tyre-kicker after a cheap quote, the browser miles outside your area, the "just curious" who filled nothing in. If your ads pull those in, it's not bad luck. It's that nothing is stopping them from getting through.

The four reasons it happens

1. There's no qualifying funnel

This is the big one. If your ad sends people straight to a phone number or a contact form, there's no filter. Everyone gets through, so you spend your evenings sifting time-wasters. A proper funnel asks the job, the postcode, the timeframe and the number up front, so the browsers drop out before they ever reach you.

2. The targeting is too wide

Blast an ad across a 50-mile radius and you'll pay to reach people you'd never drive to. Good leads come from tight, local targeting: the exact postcodes you actually cover, aimed at homeowners, not everyone with a pulse.

3. The creative attracts the wrong people

Lead with "cheap" and you'll attract cheap. If the ad screams discount, you get bargain-hunters. Real footage of quality work attracts homeowners who want quality work, and they're the ones with money to spend. What you show is what you get.

4. The follow-up is too slow

Even a good lead turns to rubbish if you leave it two days. They've messaged three other trades by then. Slow replies don't just lose that job, they make every lead look worse than it was.

How to fix each one

Put a qualifying funnel between the ad and your phone. Tighten the targeting to your real service area. Run creative that shows your actual work, not a price. And reply fast, with automated follow-up so nothing sits cold. Do those four things and the same ad budget starts producing leads worth quoting.

That's the whole system I build for trades: hyper-local ads, real footage, a qualifying funnel and fast follow-up, so what lands on your phone is already sorted.

What a good lead looks like

A good lead reaches you with a name, a number, a postcode and the actual job they want doing. You already know it's in your area and worth your time before you ring. You're not chasing, you're quoting. That's the difference between ads that drain your budget and ads that fill your diary.

If your leads have been rubbish, it's fixable, and it's usually the funnel. Here's why Facebook ads work for trades when they're set up right.
